Client Overview

We partnered with i-payout, a fintech platform based in Florida, built to support secure digital payment and payout workflows. The platform enables critical financial operations such as user authentication, wallet management, beneficiary setup, transaction processing, payouts, and compliance-ready reporting.

Given the financial nature of the product, the system relies heavily on backend APIs to ensure secure fund movement, accurate data handling, and predictable system behavior. Even minor API failures or improper error handling could lead to financial discrepancies, security risks, or compliance issues.

The Challenge

As the platform evolved, the client faced several backend quality challenges that increased production risk:

  • Inconsistent API error handling across different endpoints
  • APIs returning 500 Internal Server Errors for invalid client inputs instead of proper 4xx responses
  • Limited and evolving API documentation
  • Dependency on development teams for test data and environment clarity
  • Need for strong validation of authentication, authorization, and financial request handling

Manual checks alone were not enough to ensure confidence in such a critical fintech system.

Our Approach & Methodology

We used a risk-based API testing approach to validate critical fintech workflows, focusing on secure authentication, accurate financial transactions, and robust error handling. Extensive negative and edge-case testing ensured consistent and predictable API behavior.

How We Solved It

We conducted comprehensive backend API testing across all major fintech workflows.

Key Activities Included

  • We tested 120+ APIs covering authentication, wallet management, beneficiaries, payouts, transactions, and reporting
  • We Designed and executed 350+ API test cases, including positive, negative, boundary, and edge-case scenarios
  • We Validated request payloads, headers, authentication tokens, and response schemas
  • Verified correct HTTP status codes (200, 201, 400, 401, 403, 404, 500)
  • Identified and reported cases where APIs returned server errors instead of appropriate validation errors
  • Logged, tracked, and managed defects using Jira
  • Performed multiple rounds of retesting and regression testing after fixes

The Results We Delivered

  • Improved overall API stability and reliability
  • Reduced risk of production failures in financial workflows
  • Stronger backend validation and error handling
  • More predictable and secure API behavior
  • Improved QA–Dev collaboration and faster defect resolution
